Taiwan Outbound Departure Statistics for February 2024


- In February 2024, the total number of outbound travelers reached 1,389,474, showing a growth rate of 112.80% compared to the same period in the year 2023, which had 652,943 travelers.
- For February 2024, the top destination for outbound Taiwanese travelers was Japan, followed by China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Thailand. Compared to the same period in 2023, China experienced the highest growth rate at 233.28 %.

In February of the year 2024, the number of incoming tourists to Taiwan reached 648,348, exhibiting a growth of 75.66% compared to the same period in the previous year (2023).

DGBAS Latest Economic Indicators for April 2024 (Partial data based on February and March 2024 figures)

- In March 2024, the number of employed persons was 11.581 million, the number of unemployed persons was 405,000, the unemployment rate was 3.38%, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.40%, and the labor force participation rate was 59.24%. The four-week unemployment rate was 3.49%.
- In February, the average regular monthly salary for all employed individuals (including both local and foreign full-time employees, as well as some part-time employees) was NT$45,917, showing a monthly decrease of 0.44% and an annual increase of 2.52%. Non-regular income, including bonuses and overtime pay, amounted to NT$35,659, bringing the total average salary to NT$81,576, reflecting a yearly increase of 54.84%. Among part-time employees, the average regular hourly wage was NT$214, with a monthly increase of 4.39% and an annual increase of 5.94%.

Preliminary Customs Import and Export Trade Statistics for April 2024
1. Exports
In April, exports totalled $37.48 billion, decreasing by 10.4% from the previous month and increasing by 4.3% from the same month last year (10.0% increase when calculated in New Taiwan Dollars); exports from January to April totalled $147.81 billion, increasing by 10.6% from the same period last year (14.6% increase when calculated in New Taiwan Dollars).
2. Imports
Imports in April amounted to $31.02 billion, a 6.4% decrease from the previous month and a 6.6% increase from the same month last year (12.4% increase when calculated in New Taiwan Dollars); imports from January to April totalled $122.39 billion, a 3.8% increase from the same period last year (a 7.5% increase when calculated in New Taiwan Dollars).
3. Trade Balance
There was a trade surplus in April of $6.46 billion, a decrease of $370 million compared to the same month last year; the trade surplus from January to April was $25.42 billion, an increase of $9.63 billion compared to the same period last year.

Vietnam Is Planning on a More Flexible Tourist Visa Validity to Boost Its Tourism Industry among Other South East Asia Countries
A new study has revealed that Malaysia was the most visited country in Southeast Asia during 2023 with a total visit of 29 million tourists. Thailand took the second place with only 1 million visitors less than Malaysia. Third place was taken by Singapore, which recorded 13.6 million foreign tourists while Vietnam welcomed 12.6 million visitors. Recently, Vietnam’s Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chinh instructed its government agencies to focus on attracting more international tourists to Vietnam. The visa-free policy expansion is expected to be applied to more countries with a longer stay especially for those who travel from the wealthy countries.

China to Lift Taiwan Tourism Restrictions: Lai Cheng-Yi Hoping the Government Could Carry out This Task
According to the spokesperson of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council Zhu Fenglian’s announcement at a regular press conference: “We will take active measures to promote cross-strait exchanges and cooperation in various fields, including tourism”, Lai Cheng-Yi, the President of the General Chamber of Commerce of the Republic of China, commented: Mainland China’s good intention sparks hope for Cross-Strait tourism reopening. Lai calls for immediate resumption of group travel, aiming for full restoration of individual travel and group tours to revive the tourism exchange glory as 8 years ago.

Japan to Charge Tourists Consumption Tax and Refund at Departure
Japan is considering introducing cashless tax refunds for inbound travellers, as part of efforts to prevent them from illicitly earning money by reselling tax-free items before departure. Under the envisaged system, the government would have foreign travellers pay for products that include the consumption tax, which would be later refunded through a credit card or other cashless format.
