Taiwan Outbound Departure Statistics for March 2024

  1. In March 2024, the total number of outbound travelers reached 1,321,971, showing a growth rate of 79.55% compared to the same period in the year 2023, which had 736,283  travelers.
  2. For March 2024, the top destination for outbound Taiwanese travelers was Japan, followed by China, Korea, Vietnam, and Thailand. Compared to the same period in 2023, China experienced the highest growth rate at 216.64 %.

In March of the year 2024, the number of incoming tourists to Taiwan reached 811,608, exhibiting a growth of 66.94% compared to the same period in the previous year (2023).

DGBAS Latest Economic Indicators for May 2024 (Partial data based on March and April 2024 figures)

  1. In April 2024, the number of employed persons was 1,157.9 million, the number of unemployed persons was 403,000, the unemployment rate was 3.36%, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.39%, and the labor force participation rate was 59.21%. The four-week unemployment rate was 3.38%.
  2. In March, the average regular monthly salary for all employed individuals (including both local and foreign full-time employees, as well as some part-time employees) was NT$46,062, showing a monthly decrease of 0.33% and an annual increase of 2.00%. Non-regular income, including bonuses and overtime pay, amounted to NT$6,656, bringing the total average salary to NT$52,718, reflecting a yearly increase of1.51%. Among part-time employees, the average regular hourly wage was NT$206, with a monthly decrease of 3.74% and an annual increase of 3.00%.

1. Exports
In May, exports totalled $37.36 billion, decreasing by 0.3% from the previous month and increasing by 3.5% from the same month last year (9.2% increase when calculated  in New Taiwan Dollars); exports from January to May totalled $185.14 billion, increasing by 9.1% from the same period last year (13.4% increase when calculated in New Taiwan Dollars).

2. Imports
Imports in May amounted to $31.31 billion, a 0.9% increase from the previous month and a 0.6% increase from the same month last year (6.2% increase when calculated in New Taiwan Dollars); imports from January to May totalled $153.69 billion, a 3.2% increase from the same period last year (a 7.2%  increase when calculated in New Taiwan Dollars).

3. Trade Balance
There was a trade surplus in May of $6.05 billion, an increase of $1.07 billion compared to the same month last year; the trade surplus from January to May was $31.46 billion, an increase of $10.69 billion compared to the same period last year.

Tourism Industry Urges New Government to Lift Ban on Group Tours to Mainland China before June

In early March, the Tsai administration announced that the ban on group tours to Mainland China would be reinstated on June 1st. Therefore, on the 20th, President Lai Ching-te stated that cross-strait exchanges “can begin with the resumption of bilateral and reciprocal tourism." Hsiao Po-jen, Chairman of the Travel Agent Association, reminded that in addition to reciprocity, someone must first show considerable goodwill in cross-strait dialogue. If the stance is too rigid, nothing can be discussed. The tourism industry is watching closely to see if the government will lift the ban on group tours to Mainland China before June 1st.

Peak Summer Travel Season: Japan Tour Prices Stable; South Korea, Southeast Asia, North America, and Europe Prices Rise

Summer is the peak season for overseas travel. The Travel Quality Assurance Association announced today that from July to September this year, most tour prices are either increasing or remaining stable. Specifically, prices for Japan tours are stable compared to the previous season, while prices for South Korea and Southeast Asia tours have increased. Similarly, tour prices for North America and Europe have also risen compared to the previous season.

New Malaysian Immigration Measures Effective June 1: Taiwanese Travelers Can Use Automated Gates

Malaysian Minister of Home Affairs, Saifuddin, announced today that starting June 1, travelers from 36 additional low-risk countries and regions will be able to use automated gates for faster immigration clearance. This includes travelers from Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong.

“Arabian Schengen Visa” to Be Introduced by Year-End, Covering Six Gulf Countries

The Gulf Cooperation Council recently decided to introduce a “Gulf Tourist Visa" by the end of this year. This visa will allow tourists to travel across the six Gulf countries with a single visa, similar to the Schengen visa in Europe. The six Gulf countries included are Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman.
