Taiwan Outbound Departure Statistics for January 2024

  1. In January 2024, the total number of outbound travelers reached 1,281,751, showing a growth rate of 84.03% compared to the same period in the year 2023, which had 696,474 travelers.
  2. For January 2024, the top destination for outbound Taiwanese travelers was Japan, followed by China, Hong Kong, Korea, and Vietnam. Compared to the same period in 2023, China experienced the highest growth rate at 574.73%.

In January of the year 2024, the number of incoming tourists to Taiwan reached 589,961, exhibiting a growth of 131.94% compared to the same period in the previous year (2023).

DGBAS Latest Economic Indicators for February 2024 (Partial data based on January 2024 figures)

  1. In February 2024, the number of employed persons was 11.572 million, the number of unemployed persons was 406,000, the unemployment rate was 3.39%, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.40%, and the labor force participation rate was 59.21%. The four-week unemployment rate was 3.42%.
  2. In January, the average regular monthly salary for all employed individuals (including both local and foreign full-time employees, as well as some part-time employees) was NT$46,140, showing a monthly increase of 1.22% and an annual increase of 2.30%. Non-regular income, including bonuses and overtime pay, amounted to NT$39,656, bringing the total average salary to NT$85,796, reflecting a yearly increase of 18.54%. Among part-time employees, the average regular hourly wage was NT$204, with a monthly decrease of 2.00% and an annual increase of 1.45%.

1. Exports
In March, exports totaled $41.82 billion, increasing by 33.0% from the previous month and 18.9% from the same month last year (22.8% increase when calculated in New Taiwan Dollars); exports from January to March totaled $110.33 billion, increasing by 12.9% from the same period last year (16.3% increase when calculated in New Taiwan Dollars).

2. Imports
Imports in March amounted to $33.14 billion, a 40.8% increase from the previous month and 7.1% from the same month last year (10.6% increase when calculated in New Taiwan Dollars); imports from January to March totaled $91.38 billion, a 3.0% increase from the same period last year (a 6.0%  increase when calculated in New Taiwan Dollars).

3. Trade Balance
There was a trade surplus in March of $8.68 billion, an increase of $4.43 billion compared to the same month last year; the trade surplus from January to March was $18.95 billion, an increase of $9.98 billion compared to the same period last year.

Airlines Made Fast Recovery Last Year: EVA air to be the Top 1 Airline Carried over 10 Million Passengers

In the post-pandemic era, airline and tourism industries are recovering significantly. According to the latest statistics from the Civil Aviation Administration, MOTC, last year, international air passenger traffic recovered to 68.2% of pre-pandemic levels, with a total passenger volume of 40.893 million. Among the 60 airlines operating flights to Taiwan, EVA Air (2618) led in passenger volume with over 11.366 million passengers, being the sole operator surpassing the 10 million mark."

Travellers Could Soon Enjoy NT$35,000 Duty Exemption in Taiwan around June

The Minister of Ministry of Finance, Chuang, Tsui-Yun, made the announcement today in the Finance Committee Interpellation at the Legislative Yuan. Travellers returning to Taiwan from overseas could soon enjoy a duty exemption of up to NT$35,000 per person, up from the current NT$20,000. Peng, Ying-Wei, the Director General of Customs Administration, MOF, said this new policy is on the administrative review and could be effective soon in June or July.

Thailand’s Visa-Free Entry Scheme Successfully Hit a Record High on International Traveller Numbers

Last year, as the pandemic eased, international travel experienced a great revival. Many countries regarded visa-free policies as a cornerstone of their tourism markets, enticing international tourists to visit.
