Dapeng Bay, Pingtung, The Best and Safe Place to Dabble in Water in a Warm Winter
Dapeng Bay covers the two designated scenic areas of Dapeng Bay and Little Liuqiu. The winter temperature in Dapeng Bay is 5 degrees higher than the average in northern Taiwan. Without northeast monsoon affected, Dapeng Bay has become the first choice for coastal vacations in winter in recent years.

Dapeng Bay is the only bag-shaped lagoon in Taiwan with a single outlet. In the early days, Dapeng Bay’s primary industry was oyster farming. Due to the geographical conditions –lagoon, there are winds but no waves in the 500-hectare Dapeng Bay. Thus, the bay transformed into a national scenic area for recreational water activities.
Dapeng Bay features Dapeng Bay Marina, Bayfun Pier, Mangrove Wetland Park, Qingzhou Bay, and BikeTour35 bicycle routes. It is equipped with tourism industry resources such as railways, yachts, Wangye Worshipping Ceremony culture, seafood in Donggang, and nearly a hundred accommodations. Those tourism characteristics make Dapeng Bay a modern yet culturally scenic area.
Yu-chuan Chen, director of the Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area Administration, stated that Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area was established in 1997 and has steadily developed. Take the yacht industry as an example, there are currently 48 yacht berths. CIQS service (customs, immigration, quarantine, and security) has been provided in 2021 to facilitate the direct entry of international ships into the port, which was a big step in connecting Taiwan to global networks.
Also, land transportation is very convenient now. People who drive vehicles can arrive at Dapeng Bay directly from National Highway 3. It takes 70 minutes from THSR Zuoying Station to Dapeng Bay Visitor Center by Taiwan Tourist Shuttle 9127D, Chen said.
Annual Popular Event –Dapeng Bay Marine Festival
Dapeng Bay Marine Festival, which takes place from April to May, is an annual event in Dapeng Bay and has been listed in the Taiwan Tourism Events by the Tourism Bureau. The organizer arranges activities, such as one-day captain, canoe, keelboats display, and yacht-guided tours for the general public. In addition, yacht self-driving activity is for those who hold yacht driving licenses, creating a friendly yacht parking and driving training area.
Dapeng Bay Marine Festival holds the biggest yacht racing competition in Taiwan. There are hundreds of sails at the lagoon in the daytime. The sunset reflects the beauty of the Dapeng Bay Bridge, attracting photographers to capture the beautiful scenery. In the bayside park, local bands, street arts, and open markets take place at night. Everyone can have fun in different ways. Besides, there are lots of must-eat traditional foods, such as the top 3 famous Donggang specialties (bluefin tuna, sakura shrimp, oilfish), southern Taiwanese meatballs, and Shuang Gao Ron.

2022 Qingzhou Bay Party, Downshifting and Relaxing by the Sea
Located at the junction of the Dapeng Bay estuary, Qingzhou Bay may be the only beach in Taiwan that is not affected by the northeast monsoon blocked by Dawushan. The average temperature is warmer than the north, suitable for travel in winter. At present, Qingzhou Bay has completed the maintenance of sand screening and reopened to tourists. Dive Into Little Liuqiu, Explore Coral Reefs and Sea Turtles
Little Liuqiu is an uplifted coral reef island and the only offshore island without northeast monsoon. Its clear water and rich ecology attract many sea turtles. It takes less than 20 minutes from Donggang by ferries. There are routes sailing from Dapeng Bay, Donggang, or Yanpu to Little Liuqiu.
Director Chen mentioned that visitors can travel with the “Pintung sightseeing circle" concept. In addition to visiting Dapeng Bay and Little Liuqiu, people can visit Kenting National Park, Victorystar in Pingtung (there are General Sun Li-Jen Historic House and permanent exhibition), scenery along the Dawushan, and aboriginal tribes for adding more fun to the holiday.
